Interesting days for soccer in New York. The signing of Rafa Márquez with the Red Bulls finally came through, and old NYC’s favorite, Pelé, announced the return of the New York Cosmos during the final of the amateur tournament Copa NYC.
According to blogger Ives Galarcep, a group bought the rights of the Cosmos brand. A man identified as Joe Fraga, the executive director of the team, said the comeback plan “has several phases, but if you fast-forward, it’s our aspiration to play at the highest level in this country and that’s MLS.”
The long awaited return of the Cosmos comes in the midst of the New York Red Bulls latest effort to become the team-to-beat in the MLS. Today, the club announced the signing of Mexican star Rafa Márquez, just a few weeks after bringing to the pitch French striker Thierry Henry.
Although it seems opportunistic to revive the Cosmos after Red Bulls’ expensive attempts to collect football fans in the area, a NYC’s clásico sounds exciting. Will Rafa and Henry be in these games?
